New Zealand Earthquake

7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits New Zealand

7.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits South Island

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake has hit the south island of New Zealand. The earthquake hit at 4.35am local time on Saturday. The US Geological Survey said that the epicentre was 55km (35 miles) north-west of Christchurch, at a depth of 12 km (7.5 miles).

Police say there has been widespread damage to buildings and roads as well as power cuts. Many people fled Christchurch and the nearby city of Canterbury amidst fears that the area might be hit by a tsunami.

Much of the damage done by the earthquake was in the country’s second-largest city, Christchurch. Many old buildings have collapsed and a state of emergency has been declared in the city which has a population of 386,000.

Despite the magnitude of the ‘quake the only reports of injuries were of two men seriously injured by falling masonry and glass.

The country lies at the southern end of the Pacific Ring of Fire but despite there being around 14,000 earthquakes a year only 20 or so have a magnitude of 5.0 or above.

Three people were killed in a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in 1968.

Hague Under Pressure After Aide Revelations

Hague Under Pressure After Aide Revelations

Hague Aide Resigns After Accommodation Arrangements Revealed

William Hague Chris Myers

Foreign Secretary William Hague faces pressure from within his own party after allegations that he had had an improper relationship with a male aide.

Mr Hague released a statement yesterday in which he said that he had “occasionally” shared a room with 25-year-old Chris Myers during the election campaign, adding: “Neither of us would have done so if we had thought that it in any way meant or implied something else. In hindsight I should have given greater consideration to what might have been made of that, but this is in itself no justification for allegations of this kind.”

“Fed Up Of Politics

Mr Myers was subsequently given a £30,000-a-year job by Mr Hague despite having no experience of foreign affairs but resigned his job after details emerged that he and Mr Hague had shared a room together. Mr Hague suggested yesterday that Mr Myers was now “fed up of politics.”

Hague’s “Lack Of Judgment”

Downing Street insisted yesterday that David Cameron backed the Foreign Secretary “100 per cent” and that the Prime Minister continued to have full confidence in Mr Hague, but the former Tory leader has been criticised by senior members of his party with one, former cabinet minister John Redwood, criticising his “lack of judgment” on the issue.

Writing on his blog, Mr Redwood said:

“His statement confirms that he has shared hotel rooms with a young male assistant, and argues that this assistant was well qualified to become a Special Adviser to the Foreign Office. Mr Hague has now accepted the resignation of this Special Adviser, Mr Myers. Mr Hague tells us he did not have an inappropriate relationship with this young man.

Let us hope this is now an end to the matter. Mr Hague himself now seems to believe that it was poor judgement to share a hotel room with an assistant.”

Former Tory MP Elizabeth Peacock, who gave Mr Hague his first job in politics said he is a “person of great integrity and standing” but echoed Mr Redwood when she suggested that sharing a room with Mr Myers “was poor judgment, which is most unusual for William because he is thought to have good judgment and good integrity so perhaps that was a mistake”.

Moderately Opposed To Gay Rights

Other critics of Mr Hague – who claims to be heterosexual – have criticised his voting record on gay issues. He was opposed to moves by the Labour government in the late nineties to repeal Section 28 of the Local Government Act although in 1994 he was one of only 16 Tories who backed moves to lower the age of consent for homosexuals to 16 from 21.

Details of Mr Hague’s and Mr Myers’ accommodation arrangements were revealed after the right-wing blog Order Order put in a freedom of information request about Mr Myers’ appointment.

Asil Nadir Appears At Old Bailey

Asil Nadir Appears At Old Bailey

Millionaire Fugitive Nadir Appears At Old Bailey

Asil Nadir

Millionaire fugitive Asil Nadir appeared at the Old Bailey this morning for the first time since fleeing the UK 17 years ago.

The 69-year-old former chairman of the Polly Peck trading empire returned to Britain last week from northern Cyprus. He had fled to the Turkish federated state in 1993 as he was due to be tried over the collapse of his Polly Peck business empire.

Mr Nadir had faced 66 counts of theft and £34m fraud allegations when he fled the UK. It is alleged that he transferred the money out of Polly Peck leading to its collapse. Polly Peck had been a leading Stock Exchange performer prior to its collapse; in early 1990 it was estimated that anyone who had invested £1,000 in the company in 1980 would by then be holding shares worth £1.3 million. The company collapsed with debts of around £1.3 billion in the autumn of 1990.

Political Donor

The former Conservative Party donor was driven to court in a Jaguar and smiled at waiting photographers before going inside to meet his solicitor. Judge Mr Justice Bean said he hoped Mr Nadir’s court attendance would end the “legal limbo” which has existed since Nadir fled Britain. The UK does not recognise and has no extradition treaty with Northern Cyprus.

SFO Bail Conditions

Earlier this year, Mr Nadir let it be known that he would return to the UK if he was granted bail while his case was heard, rather than being held in custody. In turn the Serious Fraud Office agreed not to oppose bail but only if the certain conditions were imposed. Mr Nadir’s appearance at the Old Bailey for today’s hearing, electronic tagging and depositing £250,000 with the court as a security are among ten conditions placed on his bail. Other conditions include, reporting to a police station once a week, surrendering his passport and being prohibited from going near any airport.

‘Abuse Of Process Application’

In an interview with the BBC during his flight back to the UK last week Mr Nadir questioned whether there would be a trial and then suggested that there may be an abuse of process application to ensure there was no trial.

Mr Nadir was declared bankrupt in 1991 with £375 million worth of debts of which less than £1 million has been realised. He is currently renting a £20,000 a month Mayfair home.
