Arsenal Want Fabregas To Stay For Five More Years

Cesc Fabregas

Arsene Wenger is already making plans for Cesc Fabregas to stay for next season – and beyond! The Arsenal manager thinks that Barcelona won’t be getting their hands on Fabregas this summer and has also made plans for his captain to remain at the Emirates beyond the end of the coming season: “Look at the length of his contract and you will see he has five or six years to go,” Wenger told the club’s website on Friday. “When you sign a contract it means we are committed to a player to pay him and keep him no matter what happens.” Wenger has also re-iterated his commitment not to negotiate with Barcelona. “We do not negotiate,” he said at Friday’s Arsenal press conference. “If I want to buy your house and you don’t want to sell, you don’t negotiate with me, that’s completely normal.I have spoken to him directly but I believe it’s important that meetings between me and the players remain secret. I never come out with the words I exchange with my players.”

Wenger Admits Arsenal Need Defenders

Meanwhile Wenger has admitted that Arsenal have defensive frailties and that he will be addressing them before the transfer window closes at the end of August. “We are still on the search because at the moment we only have three centre backs and we have seen last season you needed five”, said the Frenchman. “I believe we need at least four because we have some other players who can fill in this position but overall we are still on the search.”

Inter Ready To Bid £20m For Liverpool’s Mascherano

Inter Milan are set to table a £20 million for Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano. The want-away Argentine midfielder has been left out of Liverpool’s friendly with Borussia Moenchengladbach in Germany tomorrow and it is expected that Inter are set to table an opening offer in the next few days. However, Liverpool are likely to want at least £25 million for Mascherano, who told new boss Roy Hodgson on Monday of his desire to leave Anfield.

Liverpool Join Race For Standard’s Defour

Liverpool have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Standard Liege’s Steven Defour. The Belgian was out of action for much of last season with a foot injury, although he was already being tracked by Sir Alex Ferguson. United have been linked for some time with a £13 million bid for the 22-year-old who scored a late equaliser for Standard against Zulte Waregem last night in the opening match of the Belgian League season.

Manchester United Lead Transfer Race For Ozil

Manchester United are now said to be leading the way to sign German World Cup star Mesut Ozil. The 21-year-old has a year left on his contract with Werder Bremen and United are said to be readying a £12 million bid to take him to Old Trafford. However, Ozil himself, speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca this week about rumours of a move away from Werder to Real Madrid, said “I love Spain,” adding “I’m not talking about Real Madrid … for the moment.”

Garrido Signs For Lazio

Javier Garrido has left Manchester City for Lazio for £2.5 million. Lazio president Claudio Lotito hailed Garrido as first choice to replace Aleksander Kolarov who signed for City last week.

Manchester City Set To Resume Balotelli Transfer Talks

Meanwhile City are still some way off signing Italian teenage striker Mario Balotelli. It is believed that City and Inter Milan have agreed a fee of around £24 million for the 19-year-old, but that Balotelli’s wage demands are holding up the deal’s conclusion. City boss Roberto Mancini is keen to link up again with the player he signed for Inter while coach there in 2006, but he is not prepared to pay over-inflated wages for players. “As long as there’s hope there’s life,” Balotelli’s agent Mino Raiola told Sky Italia on Friday. Meanwhile, Inter president Massimo Moratti admitted that talks would not resume before Monday, adding: “It’s necessary that all three parties are happy when the talks have been concluded.”

Arsenal Duo Ready For Loans

Arsene Wenger is ready to let two of his young midfielders go out on loan. Southampton are talking to Arsenal about taking 18-year-old Emmanuel Frimpong on a loan deal, while Hull City are interested in 20 year-old Mark Randall.

West Ham Turn Down Stoke Bid For Cole

West Ham have turned down a bid of around £9 million from Stoke City for striker Carlton Cole. Stoke are expected to come back with a bigger bid for the 26-year-old who hit 10 goals for the Hammers last season. However, Stoke boss Tony Pulis hinted earlier this week that he may be ready to play a waiting game to land the players he wants. Pulis told the Stoke Sentinel: “I think the best deals will be done at the back end of it and we may have to wait until the back end to get the players we want. But what we want is players with the attitude we already have at the football club.” However, Cole’s former West Ham team-mate Matt Etherington has called on his former team-mate to join him in the Potteries, saying: “If West Ham are willing to let him go, it would be a good move for him to come here. Given the ideas the manager has and the way the club want to push forward, I’d definitely recommend it.”

Fulham In Bid For Craig Bellamy

New Fulham boss Mark Hughes is close to persuading Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy to join him at his new club. Spurs had been ready to put in a low bid of £4 million to secure Bellamy’s services at White Hart Lane as City cut down their squad to the 25 required under new Premier League rules. Bellamy wants to stay and fight for his place at Eastlands but fears City’s new big-money signings may squeeze him out of the 25-man squad. However, the possibility of linking up with old boss at City could tempt him to head south and join up with Hughes again at Craven Cottage.

Wigan Complete Stam Deal

Wigan have completed the signing of defender Ronnie Stam from FC Twente for a fee of around £2 million. The Dutchman has signed a three-year deal and joins Wigan after a two-year spell with Twente, whom he joined in 2008 after six years with NAC Breda.

N’Zogbia Looks To Leave Wigan

Meanwhile, Charles N’Zogbia looks set to leave Wigan – and with the blessing of the club. Speaking to French newspaper, L’Equipe, N’Zogbia said “When I came here, I was in a period where I wanted to re-launch myself. Today I’m at Wigan but if tomorrow a good club with great aims contacts me, I am open. I have talked about it with my bosses. They won’t put a spoke in the wheel.” Birmingham are said to be interested. The Blues abandoned talks with N’Zogbia after Wigan rejected an £8 million bid but may be set to resume their efforts to land the French winger, who has been called into the French squad by new manager Laurent Blanc for their friendly with Norway after Blanc suspended the entire World Cup squad.

Blackburn Give Trial To Faty

Blackburn want Roma striker Ricardo Faty. The Italian side have said the Frenchman can leave the club where he has struggled to get into the first team making just 19 appearances in four seasons.

Stead’s Blackpool Deal Stalls

Jon Stead won’t be going to Blackpool after all, it seems. The Ipswich striker earlier this week turned down a move to Bristol City after terms had been agreed between the clubs and opened negotiations with the Seasiders; however, he couldn’t agree terms after Blackpool said they couldn’t match the £12,000 a week he was earning at Ipswich so the £250,000 deal is currently on the rocks.

Mido is threatening to hold up his proposed move from Middlesbrough to Ajax. The Egyptian striker wants a £1 million pay-off from Boro and is threatening to sit out the final year of his contract. Meanwhile, Boro need to get Mido’s £40,000 a week wages off the books.

Hull City have loaned Algerian striker Kamel Ghilas to newly-promoted French side Arles-Avignon for the whole of next season.

Southampton are looking to bring former striker Dexter Blackstock back to St Mary’s on loan from Nottingham Forest. Blackstock made his debut for the Saints in 2004 before being sold to QPR two years later.

Preston look ready to sign two players. Former Norwich midfielder Darel Russell is set to sign after his contract at Carrow Road expired while DR Congo striker Patrick Dimbala is in trial after his release by Greek side PAS Giannina.

George Boateng is set to sign a deal with Greek side Skoda Xanthi.

Chelsea Bid £50m For Torres

There are reports today that Chelsea have offered a club record £50 million for Liverpool’s Fernando Torres. The Blues have already had a £40 million bid turned down by Liverpool and new boss Roy Hodgson yesterday re-iterated his desire to keep Torres. Hodgson spoke to the Spaniard this week though he described their talks as “brief.” He said: “I found him to be a very pleasant man and we had a nice conversation. As far as we are concerned he is a Liverpool player and we want him to remain a Liverpool player. He is not for sale and we don’t welcome any offers for him. We want to keep him.” However, Hodgson has admitted that he hasn’t spoken to Javier Mascherano and that the Argentinian has gone back to his home country. : “I have tried to contact Javier. I have left him voice messages and sent him texts but had no reply,” Hodgson said. “To be fair to him, that’s not unusual because he’s had a tough World Cup and I believe he’s gone back to Argentina. It’s not always easy to get in touch with people. I have tried to reach him to make clear I am happy to talk with him at his convenience.” Hodgson has had better luck in contacting Steven Gerrard. He described talks with Gerrard as “positive” adding that he has had no offers for the player. “What we haven’t had is a club wanting to buy Steven Gerrard. Steven Gerrard is not for sale – I made that clear to him.”

Liverpool Expect To Sign Striker Remy

Liverpool expect to sign Nice striker Loic Remy. The French centre-forward, who until the last couple of days was expected to sign for West Ham, is to undergo a medical on Merseyside and will sign a five-year deal for a fee of £12.5 million, £7.5 million of which will be paid up-front. West Ham are believed to have offered £12 million, payable in three equal instalments. Remy has spent the past two seasons at Nice after signing for 8 million euros from Lyon in 2008. He scored 11 times in 32 league games in 2008/09 and followed that up with 14 goals in 33 games last season. However, Lyon have first option on Remy and could yet scupper the deal.

Chelsea Want £30m For Cole

Chelsea want £30 million for Ashley Cole. The 30-year-old England defender is said to be desperate for a move abroad after the media attention his split with wife Cheryl Cole attracted, while Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas suggested this week that Cole was set to move to the Bernabeu. A fee of £30 million, though, is likely to deter Real although Chelsea have suggested that the fee could be lowered if Cole asks for a move.

City To Return With New Bid For Milner

Manchester City are hoping that an offer of £25 million for James Milner will be accepted by Aston Villa. City have already offered £18 million plus £2 million in add-ons, while Villa’s valuation is closer to £30 million. A new offer is expected to be put to Villa early next week.

Kolarov Deal Hits Snag

Meanwhile Manchester City’s hopes of signing Lazio full-back Aleksandar Kolarov have hit a snag after the Italian club claimed they are still waiting for a written offer for the player. “Until an offer arrives we cannot discuss if there is a disagreement between the two parties,” said club president Claudio Lotito.

United Target Alves In Russian Move

Manchester United target Bruno Alves could be on the verge of a move to Russia. Zenit St Petersburg are looking to sign Alves in a transfer worth £12.5 million to his club, Porto. United had been looking at Alves as a possible replacement for Nemanja Vidic. The Serb is said to be looking for a move away from Old Trafford with reports today that he would like to switch to Real Madrid in an £18 million move.

Spurs and Villa Discuss Keane Move

Spurs are talking to Aston Villa about the transfer of Robbie Keane. The 30-year-old striker is surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane and Spurs are eager to use the proceeds to finance a move for Manchester City’s Craig Bellamy. The Welshman will cost Spurs £5 million.

Sporting Keen On dos Santos

Sporting Lisbon want a loan deal for Tottenham’s Giovanni dos Santos. The Mexican impressed during the World Cup and was short-listed for Fifa’s best young player award at the tournament. Spurs are ready to make a £4.2 million offer for Sporting winger, Yannick Djalo, and are ready to use dos Santos as a makeweight in a deal for the 24-year-old Djalo.

Bolton Given First Refusal On Wilshere

Bolton have been give first refusal on Jack Wilshere. However, that all depends on whether or not Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger chooses to loan him out again. Wilshere spent the second half of last season on loan at the Reebok scoring once in 14 appearances.

No Everton Deal For Donovan

LA Galaxy have told Everton that Landon Donovan won’t be going back to Goodison in a permanent deal. Donovan impressed in a loan spell last season, scoring twice in 10 games but MLS commissioner Don Garber says he hopes Donovan will spend the rest of his career in the MLS. “Landon is, in my view, the greatest player of our generation and an incredibly valuable part of our history – but also our future.” Everton boss David Moyes said this week that he would not be bringing any more players in this summer.

Genoa Losing Interest In Boateng

Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s interest in Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng has waned. Gasperini had been considering making a move for the Ghana World Cup star, but has now decided a midfielder is not at the top of his ‘want’ list. “There isn’t a hurry for the midfield,” Gasperini said.

West Ham Sign Ben Haim

West Ham have signed defender Tal Ben Haim. The Israeli teams up with former boss Avram Grant in a deal worth up to £1 million. Ben Haim was able to walk away from Portsmouth after invoking a clause in his contract that gave him a free transfer if the club was relegated. He arrived in England in 2004, signing for Bolton from Maccabi Tel Aviv in a deal worth £150,000. He left Bolton after three seasons but West Ham will be his fourth club since then, excluding a loan spell at Sunderland. Meanwhile, West Ham have also wrapped up the signings of Mexican winger Pablo Barrera from UNAM Pumas for £4 million and Frederic Piqionne from Lyon for £1 million. Avran Grant also hopes to announce another signing in the next few days.

Celtic Sign Murphy

Celtic have signed Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy for an undisclosed fee. Murphy spent five seasons at the Stadium Of Light after signing from his hometown club Waterford United; however, he only scored 14 league goals in 110 appearances for the Black Cats.

Jol Favourite For Fulham Job as Sidwell Signs Up

Fulham will announce their new boss next week. Martin Jol of Ajax is favourite, with reports that he has already agreed a deal with the club. Meanwhile Aston Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell is set to join Fulham in a deal worth £2 million. Sidwell was also wanted by West Ham but was said to be swayed by the impending appointment of Martin Jol as manager. Sidwell will sign a three-year contract at Craven Cottage.

Preston Snap Up United Youngster

Preston North End have signed right-back David Gray after he was released by Manchester United. Gray made just one appearance for United, in a League Cup game against Crewe in 2006. The 22-year-old spent the early part of last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle.

Ipswich Sign Sunderland Youngster

Sunderland have let Irish Under-19 international Conor Hourihane go to Ipswich. Former Black Cats boss Roy Keane has signed the young midfielder on a one-year deal.

No Release for Yorkshire Ripper

No Release for Yorkshire Ripper

Sutcliffe To Spend Rest Of Life Behind Bars

Peter Sutcliffe

A judge has ruled that Peter Sutcliffe – the Yorkshire Ripper – will never be released from prison. The 63-year-old had applied for a minimum term to be applied to his sentence to give him the chance of parole.

Sutcliffe was sentenced to 20 life terms in 1981 after the murder of 13 women and the attempted murder of seven others. At the time it was recommended that he should serve at least 30 years in prison.

However, Mr Justice Mitting has ruled that “early release provisions” were “not to apply”.

The judge said: “This was a campaign of murder which terrorised the population of a large part of Yorkshire for several years.

“Apart from a terrorist outrage, it is difficult to conceive of circumstances in which one man could account for so many victims.

“Those circumstances alone make it appropriate to set a whole life term.”

Sutcliffe has been in Broadmoor for much of his near-30 years in jail.

Cable Proposes Graduate Tax

Cable Proposes Graduate Tax

Bankrupt Universities May Close

Vince Cable

High-earning graduates may be expected to pay more in tax than their lower-paid counterparts under plans announced by the Business Secretary Vince Cable. In an about-turn to his party’s line during the general election campaign when the Liberal Democrats proposed abolishing tuition fees altogether, Mr Cable also warned that universities had to be ready for a period of contraction.

In a speech at London’s South Bank University on the theme of ‘the looming crisis,’ Mr Cable also warned that some universities could go to the wall in future.

The business secretary is to ask a review of university fees and funding being carried out by former BP boss Lord Browne to examine the “feasibility of variable graduate contributions.” It is feared that the review, to be published in the autumn, will recommend that tuition fees should at least double from their current level of £3,225 a year.

Lord Browne has told Mr Cable that he intends to look at the possibility of high-earners paying more, an idea which Mr Cable says has the support of the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

“The system has no relations to your earnings later in life. So a teacher or a youth worker pays the same amount as a surgeon or a top commercial lawyer,” Mr Cable said.
“It may be possible to levy graduate contributions so that low graduate earners pay no more – or less – and high earners pay more,” said Mr Cable. He added that no decisions have yet been taken, but he added: “I would urge universities to help us think creatively about fairer mechanisms than the current one, recognising that for students and their families a central issue is securing an equitable system of graduate contributions.”
The coalition government is trying to encourage the expansion of private universities and Mr Cable said it was inevitable that some universities would struggle. However, students at these universities would be protected. “It would be similar to banks,” Mr Cable said. “Banks can fail, but depositors are still protected,” he said.
“The reality is we are going to have to develop a model in which the balance of funding for higher education in England combines less public support and more private investment from those who benefit most from it.”

He went on: “The university sector has experienced half a century or more of expansion – in numbers of students, staff and institutions. There is enormous forward momentum. I wonder how many people in this room really – deep down – are psychologically prepared for a period of consolidation, perhaps even contraction. We need to rethink how we fund them, and what we expect them deliver for the public support they receive.”

Mr Cable said that other possibilities being considered where two year degrees and scrapping Labour’s target of 50% of people studying at university because “it isn’t sensible.”

However, Mr Cable’s proposals have met with opposition from trade unions. The lecturers’ union, the University and College Union (UCU), said that a graduate tax would simply ‘rebrand’ student debt. It said the government needed to clarify if students would be picking up the bill, through a graduate tax or other funding models, for its cuts agenda.

The union said it was surprised that the government appeared to only now be asking Lord Browne to look at a graduate tax and questioned exactly what the review had been doing if not exploring all the options around the future of university funding.

Chelsea Step Up Torres Pursuit Despite Injury

Undeterred by his latest injury, Chelsea are to step up their pursuit of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres. Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is to fly out to Spain to speak to Torres, who is out of action for three weeks with a torn thigh muscle. According to the Daily Mail, Hodgson’s dilemma is whether to get Torres back into training as soon as possible or to give him more time on the training pitch. Chelsea will argue that they can use Torres more sparingly instead of putting him into the starting line-up as soon as they feel he is ready.

United Interested In Lahm

Manchester United are interested in Bayern Munich’s German World Cup captain Philip Lahm. Bayern are already lining up Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel as a replacement for Lahm but would like to do a cash-plus-player deal with United with Ji-Sun Park going to the Bundesliga side. United have also been offered Porto defender Raul Meireles, who last week was being tipped for a move to Chelsea to replace Ricardo Carvalho.

Sunderland Ready To Tie Up Welbeck Deal

Sunderland are ready to tie up a deal for Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck. The 19-year-old forward spent part of last season on loan at Preston scoring twice in eight games. It is not known whether he will join Sunderland on a loan deal or on a permanent transfer. Welbeck is under contract at Old Trafford until 2013. The Black Cats are also lining up a bid for Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha.

Liverpool’s Insua Ready To Join Fiorentina As N’Gog Stalls On West Brom Loan

Fiorentina have agreed a £5 million fee for Liverpool left-back, Emiliano Insua. The 21-year-old made 44 league appearances in three years at Anfield. Meanwhile David N’Gog has told Liverpool that he doesn’t want to go to West Brom. The striker had been tipped to go to The Hawthorns on a season-long loan, but his agent, Bruno Satin said: “The boy wants to fight for his place at Liverpool. He thinks he has a good future at Liverpool and does not want to be pushed out on loan.”

Liverpool To Give Riera A Chance

New Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is to give Albert Riera a chance to stake a claim for a first-team place after he was named in a 22-man squad for the club’s Swiss training camp. Riera was transfer-listed after publicly criticising then manager Rafa Benitez, and while it still appears highly possible that Riera will move on, Hodgson is hedging his bets by naming the player in the squad for Switzerland. Liverpool will play Saudi Arabian champions Al-Hilal on Saturday in Austria.

Celtic Admit McGeady Exit Likely

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has admitted that Aiden McGeady looks set to leave Celtic Park for an English club. “Aiden hasn’t said to me he wants to leave in so many words,” said Lennon, “but, I mean, the initial vibe came from his side of things.” Russian side Spartak Moscow have put a near-£10-million bid on the table but the midfielder is known to want a move to a Premier League club with Birmingham City, Aston Villa and Spurs all said to be interested. McGeady hasn’t made it to the USA on Celtic’s pre-season tour as he tries to shake off a thigh injury.

Man City Tell Liverpool To Forgert About Richards

Manchester City have told Liverpool to forget about signing Micah Richards. Despite persistent rumours linking Richards with a move away from Eastlands, boss Roberto Mancini insists the England defender has a future with the club.

Anderlecht Deny Lukaku Chelsea Links

Anderlecht have denied reports that teenage striker Romalu Lukaku is set to join Chelsea. The club’s general manager Herman van Holsbeech has said that both the club and the player’s father want the 17-year-old to complete his education at the club’s school. “He has another year to go,and that is another reason why we have no intention of selling him this summer,” said van Holsbeech.

West Ham Duo Set For Exit – New Signings Expected

Alessandro Diamanti and Radoslav Kovac look set to leave West Ham. Greek side Olympiakos are interested in taking both players on a permanent deal as the Hammers look to raise funds for new players. Pablo Barrera has already arrived at Upton Park and has already upset fans by suggesting that he will leave West Ham for a bigger club after a couple of years. Nice striker Loic Remy could be on his way if the two clubs can work out how to stage payments for his £12 million fee. Meanwhile, the Hammers say they are set to announce new signings in the next few days. West Ham posted a narrow 2-1 win over Peterborough at London Road on Wednesday, teenage midfielder Anthony Edgar scoring the winner. Carlton Cole was also on target.

No Further Everton Transfer Buys – Moyes

Everton boss David Moyes says his business is over in the transfer market. Moyes has signed Jermaine Beckford from Leeds on a free transfer, Magaye Guaye from Strasbourg for £900,000 and Joao Silva from Portugese side Desportivo Das Aves for £500,000. “There’s no cash to sign any more players for the club for the time being so it’s unlikely we will be bringing in any more new faces before the new season starts in August,” Moyes said in Australia after the Toffees defeated A-League side Melbourne Heart, 2-0.

Shorey Wants To Stay In Premier League

Aston Villa left-back Nicky Shorey looks set to turn down a move to Nottingham Forest in order to stay in the Premier League. The 29-year-old has been told he can leave Villa Park and is interesting Forest, however the former England player prefers a permanent move to Fulham, where he spent part of last season on-loan.

Jol Now Tops Fulham’s Short-List

The list of names for the Fulham manager’s job seems to be changing almost daily. Sven-Goran Eriksson seems to be out of the running after hinting that he may stay with the Ivory Coast national side which he managed at the World Cup. Eriksson is believed to want more than the £1.5 million that Fulham are willing to offer. Recent reports that Ottmar Hitzfeld and Bob Bradley are on the short-list can also be discounted while Ajax manager Martin Jol has moved to the head of the list. A decision by club owner Mohammed Al-Fayed is expected by the end of the week.

Birmingham Lodge New Clyne Bid

Birmingham have lodged another bid for Crystal Palace youngster, Nathaniel Clyne. The Blues have had a £750,000 bid for the 19-year-old turned down by Palace and have now offered £1.25 million. However, only £500,000 of that is payable up-front and Palace boss George Burley is likely to want a higher up-front payment before parting with the young defender.

Blackburn Looking to Sell Roberts

Blackburn look set to sell striker Jason Roberts. Boss Sam Allardyce needs to raise funds to buy new players with a striker his main priority in the summer transfer window, but he is in a sell-before-you-can-buy situation while the club’s ownership issue is being resolved and with Roberts out of his plans for the coming season Allardyce is looking to cash in and put the proceeds towards new players. Meanwhile Blackburn target Guti is set to join Turkish side Besiktas. Guti will sign a two-year deal and pick up around £45,000 a week in wages.

Stoke To £3m For Boro’s O’Neil As Obinna Admits Interest

Stoke City are set to bid £3 million for Middlesbrough midfielder Gary O’Neil. The Potters failed to land O’Neil in the January window. Meanwhile boss Tony Pulis has denied that he would like to carry out a player-exchange involving O’Neil and Liam Lawrence. Stoke are a possible destination for Inter Milan striker Victor Obinna. The Nigerian is believed to be out of Inter boss Rafa Benitez’s plans for the forthcoming season and is wanted by a number of European clubs. Yesterday he referred to Stoke as “a very powerful team” saying he would be at home there. “It is only rumours and nothing serious so far; let’s wait and see. Teams have started moving now. I am aware of the interest from three or four clubs. I will take my time and make the right choice if I am not wanted here. I want to play week in, week out.” Obinna scored nine goals while on loan at La Liga side Malaga last season. Meanwhile, Portsmouth want to take Stoke’s Ibrahima Sonko on loan.

Blackpool Sign Defender Keinan

Blackpool have signed Israeli international defender Dekel Keinan on a free transfer from Maccabi Haifa. The 25-year-old decided not to renew his contract at the Israeli club bringing to an end an eight-year spell there and has instead signed a one-year deal with the Seasiders. Blackpool are also targeting four players whose loans helped them to promotion last season. Full-back Seamus Coleman, strikers DJ Campbell and Stephen Dobbie and midfielder Barry Bannan are all being targeted by boss Ian Holloway while former Monaco midfielder Malaury Martin is on trial at Bloomfield Road and will join the club’s pre-season tour of Devon.

Danish international winger Dennis Rommedahl has joined Greek side Olympiakos on a two-year contract. Rommedahl joins from Ajax, where he has spent the past three seasons since leaving Charlton Athletic in 2007.

Leicester’s Steve Howard and Huddersfield Town’s Theo Robinson are exchanging clubs. Veteran striker Howard will drop down a division while Robinson moves to the Walker’s Stadium. Robinson scored 13 times in 37 league games for the Terriers last season.

West Brom goalkeeper Luke Daniels has joined Bristol Rovers on a season-long loan.

Torres Groin Tear Will Not Jeopardise Chelsea Move

Fernando Torres’ groin tear will not jeopardise Chelsea’s interest in him. Torres pulled up during the closing moments of Spain’s World Cup Final win over Holland on Sunday and is expected to miss the start of the new season. However, Chelsea remain undeterred and are determined to secure Torres’ signature. A £30 million bid has been dismissed out of hand by Liverpool who have reportedly put a £100 million price tag on the player. Meanwhile, David N’Gog’s loan move to West Brom has been put on hold while Torres recovers. Liverpool have a third qualifying round tie in the Europa League at the end of July and with Torres’ injury new boss Roy Hodgson could find himself short of strikers if N’gog goes.

Real Interest In Steven Gerrard Cooled By £60 Price Tag

Real Madrid’s interest in Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard has cooled after the Anfield club asked for £60 million for the player. Real are expected to turn their attention to Stuttgart’s World Cup star Sami Khadira. The club’s transfer consultant (!) Ernesto Bronzetti said club president Florentino Perez “does not agree with Gerrard because he is 30 and Perez doesn’t want to know. Plus Liverpool asked for 70 million euro.”

Balotelli Agent In Talks With Manchester Duo

Mario Balotelli’s agent Mino Raiola is due to fly in to Manchester to commence talks with both Manchester United and Manchester City. The £30-million rated youngster could well leave Inter Milan with Manchester as a possible destination; however, Raiola gave no clues as to where his client’s future lies. “The player is clearly happy to be followed by Ferguson. But I cannot exclude that in the end the player will remain at Inter or play in a different club with respect to the English outfit.” Inter boss Rafa Benitez is said to be targeting Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt as a replacement.

Real Sociedad Unlikely To Sign Jo

Real Sociedad are unlikely to sign Manchester City striker Jo. The Brazilian – who cost £18 million two years ago – was said to be on the newly-promoted side’s radar but club president Jokin Aperribay says a move is unlikely. “It’s not a closed case,” he said “but it’s complicated for him to come to Real now and we are working on other alternatives because the possibilities of that negotiation being successful are very, very scarce.”

Arsenal Not Interested In Gourcuff

Arsenal have said they are not interested in Bordeaux’s Yoann Gourcuff. Boss Arsene Wenger told a French TV programme: “We are not interested and we have never made contact. He’s a player I like a lot, but we are sufficiently covered in midfield.”

Besiktas Join Race For Eduardo

Besiktas are interested in Arsenal striker Eduardo. Aston Villa and Valencia are also interested in the Croatian, who looks set to leave the Emirates.

Dzeko Asks Wolfsburg To Lower Valuation

Edin Dzeko wants Wolfsburg to lower their £50 million valuation of him so he can join Manchester City. Steve McClaren’s side increased their valuation of the Bosnian as soon as a £34 million buy-out clause in his contract expired on 31 May, however not only are Wolfsburg not ready to sell, they say they have had no offer for Dzeko. But the striker himself is adamant that he wants to play for a bigger club. “It is an important moment in my career,” he said. Meanwhile, Gianluigi Buffon says he would like to see Dzeko at Juventus. “For the past two or three years he has been among the best four or five strikers in Europe – he would be a great signing,” he said.

Chelsea Head Race For Belgian Teenager

Chelsea lead the way in the race to sign 17-year-old Romelu Lukaku, according to the Daily Star. The Belgian striker, nicknamed ‘the new Didier Drogba,’ has been photographed during an official club tour of Stamford Bridge wearing a Chelsea shirt. The £10-million-rated teenager has scored 15 goals in 34 league games for top Belgian side Anderlecht since making his debut in May 2009. He has also made two appearances for the Belgian national side while still a 16-year-old.

Newcastle Tell Celtic Harper Not For Sale As Boruc Heads For Italy

Newcastle have told Celtic that keeper Steve Harper is not for sale. The Hoops look set to lose Artur Boruc to Serie A side Fiorentina, but Toon boss Chris Hughton doesn’t want to lose his main keeper with two inexperienced keepers, Tim Krul and Fraser Forster, in reserve. Boruc left Celtic’s flight to the USA after it landed in London so he could negotiate with the Italian side. A statement from Fiorentina has said that Boruc will move to Italy for £3 million and talks will be concluded after he has had a medical.

Remy Wants To Move To West Ham as Barrera Arrives To Complete Move

Nice striker Loic Remy says he wants his move to West Ham to go ahead. Remy has hit 25 goals in 65 games for Nice over the past two seasons and although the two clubs are believed to have agreed a £12 million fee, they have yet to agree on how the fee is to be paid. However, Remy insists he wants to move to Upton Park: “When a club like West Ham is tempted, it is always exciting,” he said yesterday. One person who is set to sign for West Ham is Mexican winger Pablo Barrera, whose £4 million move from Pumas is set to be completed this week. The 23-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the option for a third.

Sunderland Campbell Bid Fails

Sunderland’s attempt to sign Sol Campbell has fallen through. Campbell is believed to have asked Black Cats’ boss Steve Bruce for £35,000 a week, according to the Daily Mail, and even though Bruce has offered to make him club captain, the deal has fallen through. Campbell is believed to have a £70,000 a week offer on the table from German side St Pauli, who were recently promoted to the Bundesliga where they will play for the first time since 2002. Meanwhile Argentinian left-back Marco Angeleri is training with the rest of the Sunderland squad ahead of receiving an Italian passport which will enable him to formally complete his move from Estudiantes.

Blackpool Interested In Michael Bradley

Blackpool are interested in USA midfielder Michael Bradley. The World Cup star could be ready to move on from Bundesliga side Borussia Moenchengladbach but the Seasiders may have trouble with the size of his fee. A loan deal could be on the cards. Meanwhile, winger Hameur Bouazza has left Blackpool to sign for French Ligue 1 side Arles-Avignon on a free transfer.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis is hoping to do a player-swap with Middlesbrough. Boro’s Player of the Year Gary O’Neil will head to the Britannia Stadium with Stoke’s Liam Lawrence going the other way. However, Lawrence would prefer a move to Celtic.

Blackburn Rovers want to sign 15-year-old prodigy Luka Krajnc. The Slovenian defender, who plays for NK Maribor, is also being tracked by AC Milan and Inter Milan but would like to come to England.

Celtic youngster Graham Carey could be on his way to League One side Huddersfield on a season-long loan. The 21-year-old has been in talks with the Yorkshire side. He was on loan at St Mirren last season and at Irish side Bohemians last summer.

Middlesbrough are interested in Estonian winger Tarmo Kink of Hungarian side Gyor ETO. They also look set to sign Rangers striker Kevin Thomson in a £2 million deal.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign striker Clinton Morrison.

Coventry City have offered a trial to Carl Zeiss Jena striker Orlando Smeekes.

Jon Harley has joined Notts County after being released by Watford. County also want Nottingham Forest right-back Brendan Moloney on loan.

”Not What I Expected In Terms Of Fair Play”

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has admitted some sympathy for under-fire World Cup Final referee Howard Webb.

Speaking to a press in conference in Johannesburg after the conclusion of the 19th World Cup, Blatter said: “The final was not exactly what I expected in terms of fair play. It’s not up to me judge the performances of the officials, I can only say it was a very hard task that the referee trio had on the field of play.”

Earlier, Webb had been criticised by Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk, “I don’t think the referee controlled the match well,” said Van Marwijk. “Both sides committed fouls. That may be regrettable for a final, but the best team won the match.”

Nine Dutch players were booked in last night’s Final with John Heitinga receiving two yellows. Spain picked up four bookings.

Spain won the match, 1-0, to win the World Cup for the first time.

South Pacific Experiences Eclipse

A solar eclipse across the South Pacific has been seen by thousands of people on the World Heritage site of Easter Island.

The eclipse was visible over an almost-7,000km arc across the region. It began at just after 7pm on Sunday night over the Tonga islands and was visible at 9.11pm on Easter Island. The island’s population doubled for the spectacle and after an anxious wait in which visibility was threatened by overhead clouds, the sky cleared just before the event to allow onlookers a view of the eclipse.

People on the island danced and sang as the moon passed between the earth and the sun and blotted out the sky for five minutes.

Chelsea Will Move For Coentrao If Cole Leaves

Chelsea will make a move for Benfica’s Fabio Coentrao if Ashley Cole moves to Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho is keen on pairing Cole with Inter Milan’s Maicon as twin attacking full-backs and could make bids for both. In the meantime, Chelsea are eyeing up 22-year-old Coentrao as a replacement.

Gosling Set To Sign For Newcastle

Newcastle United will sign Dan Gosling in a deal worth £5.5 million over four years. Gosling has been talking to Bolton, Sunderland and West Ham United, but Newcastle are the only team to pledge to sign Gosling even if they have to pay a fee. Gosling’s former club Everton are to appeal against a Premier League ruling whereby Gosling has left Goodison Park on a free transfer after an admin error. The Toffees made a verbal offer to Gosling before his contract expired this summer, however they didn’t put their offer in writing leaving him to exit Goodison on a free. Meanwhile, Gosling’s former club Plymouth Argyle are also set to miss out on windfall. Gosling joined Everton from Argyle in 2008 for an initial fee of £1 million. He made 37 appearances for Everton, just three short of an extra £250,000 payment to Plymouth.

Spurs In Hunt For Pienaar

The Daily Mail claims that Spurs look set to sign Everton’s Steven Pienaar, despite reports over the weekend that Pienaar is ready to sign a £55,000 a week deal at Everton. However, the Mail reports that Spurs are put off by Everton’s £15 million valuation of Pienaar.

Scharner Agent Hints At Liverpool Interest

The agent of former Wigan defender Paul Scharner claims his client could be on his way to Liverpool. This could be no more than a way of selling his club-less client but Valentin Hobil claims that Hodgson tried to sign Sharner while manager of Fulham. Hoble claims that the two have what he called a “special relationship” and added “Hodgson thinks that Paul’s strengths in midfield are better than his attributes in central defence. Liverpool would be a dream, of course, but we are in contact with several clubs. He is a free transfer and can choose where he goes.” (The Sun)

West Brom Keen On Ngog and Berg

West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Liverpool striker David Ngog on a season-long loan. Ngog has made just 37 appearances for Liverpool since signing from French side Paris St Germain in 2008. The Baggies are also in for Swedish striker Marcus Berg of SV Hamburg on a season-long loan. Berg came to prominence during the 2009 European Under-21 Championships when he scored seven times in four games, a performance that earned him at £7 million move to Hamburg from Dutch side Groningen. Berg scored on his debut for Hamburg just three minutes after coming off the bench, but he endured a tough first season scoring just four times in 30 league games for the Bundesliga side. Now, Hamburg general manager Bastien Reinhardt has told German newspaper Bild that Berg has been told to look for a loan deal this summer as he does not fit in the club’s plans for the coming campaign. “I have been talking to Marcus about his future and we advised him that it would be better if he left the club on a loan spell elsewhere,” said Reinhardt. “It would be extremely difficult for him to grab a first-team opportunity at our club this coming season.”

City Rebuff Fulham’s Hart Interest

Fulham are keen on Manchester City’s England keeper, Joe Hart. The Cottagers look set to lose Mark Schwartzer to Arsenal this week but City have made it clear that Hart will not be leaving the club.

Diop Leaves Portsmouth – Utaka Could Be Next

Papa Bouba Diop has left Portsmouth. The 32-year-old has joined Greek side AEK Athens in a £250,000 deal. John Utaka could also be on his way out of Fratton Park with Sunderland and clubs in France said to be interested. Meanwhile, Kevin Prince Boateng is being linked with a move to Liverpool. New boss Steve Cotterill said: “I would imagine that a couple of those sales might be imminent now. There’s a move on the cards for John. I think something could definitely happen there. We’ve got to get the numbers down for the Football League because of this embargo before we can try and entertain getting more players. Unfortunately now, what we’re going to be doing is loaning because a lot of the free transfers are gone. It’s a tough situation but it’s a top club.”

Barnsley look set to sign Stoke’s Uruguayan international Diego Arismendi on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old midfielder has failed to make a Premier League appearance for Stoke since arriving from Monetvideo’s Club Nacional last summer for £2.6 million.

Swansea are set to try and tie up a deal to sign Barnsley midfielder Hugo Colace. Former Swans’ boss Paolo Sousa is trying to get the Argentine to join him at Leicester but Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has offered terms to Colace.
